It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Norman Arthur Bate was born January 3, 1916 in Buffalo, New York. He earned a bachelor's degree in Illustration from Pratt and a master's degree in printmaking and painting at the University of Illinois. In the 1950s, Bates gained early recognition as an illustrator of children's books. In 1957, he came to RIT and served as professor of printmaking and illustration until his retirement in 1980.
